Wheelchair Securement in the Time of COVID-19

12/10/2020 Virtual TSD

As Schools Districts scramble to adapt their educational and transportation models to ensure the safety of their students and staff, perhaps no situation poses a great risk to our students with disabilities than the securement of their wheelchair. This process necessitates close contact between the driver and the student, often for an extended period, within the tight confines of a poorly ventilated school bus. In this presentation, we will explore strategies and tips to help mitigate this risk and increase the efficiency of the securement process without compromising safety. Additionally, we will announce a unique, high-level training opportunity that will allow districts to not only educate their staff on these new securement practices but also gain a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of wheelchair transportation.

During this presentation, we reviewed some significant advancements in securement equipment, wheelchairs, and regulation that have the long term potential to alleviate these securement difficulties.
